Couple doing finances

Money and Benefits

Looking after someone can affect your income—especially if you’ve reduced your hours or stopped working. Knowing what support is available can make a big difference.

Welfare benefits

As a carer, you may be able to get financial support. This includes Carer’s Allowance and other benefits. There’s also help for people who live with a disability or are on a low income.

Cost of living support

If you’re finding it hard to manage the cost of living, help is available in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. You can get support with:

  • Paying for food or energy bills
  • Budgeting and managing debt
  • Mental and physical health support

Council Tax reductions

You may be able to get a Council Tax reduction if you’re a carer. This depends on whether you live with the person you support or live separately.

Help with health and care costs

There may be support available to help with health or care-related costs:

  • Help with NHS health costs - Some NHS services are free, but others may have charges. If you’re on a low income, you might be able to get help with these costs.
  • NHS Continuing Healthcare - If the person you support has long-term, complex health needs, they may qualify for free social care funded by the NHS.

Grants for carers

Some charities and trusts offer grants to people who need extra support. These can be given as money, products, or services.

To get a grant, you’ll need to meet the eligibility rules for each organisation.

  • Turn2Us - offers a grant search tool and details of charities that may be able to help.
  • Leonardo Carer Support may be able to help with funding for things you need as a carer.

Carer friendly ID card

If you’re registered with us as a carer, you can apply for a Carers Card. This gives you discounts on a range of goods and services.
