Your rights as a carer
Knowing your rights can help you get the support you’re entitled to. It can also help you stay well and balance caring with other parts of your life.
The Care Act
The Care Act 2014, which came into effect on 1 April 2015, introduced the biggest changes to adult social care in over 60 years.
It puts you, and the person you support, at the centre of decisions. It gives you more choice, more control, and the right support to live well and independently.
Your rights as a carer
It can take time to realise you’re a carer. But once you do, knowing your rights can make a big difference. It helps you get the support you need to stay well, feel balanced and keep doing the things that matter to you.
If you’re also working while caring, we know that can be tough. Some carers choose to leave work, and for some, that’s the right decision. But many find that staying in work brings routine, connection and a steady income. If you’re trying to manage both, you’re not alone. There are ways to make it easier, like flexible working, carer’s leave and support from your employer.
Carer Assessment
As a carer, you have the right to a carer's assessment. You can request one at any time, even if the person you support chooses not to use social care services.
A carer’s assessment is a conversation with a social care worker about how your caring role affects your life and wellbeing.
